Recommended Fishing Lures
Here are some of our favorite lures. Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow
These flashy lures catch almost any kind of gamefish in freshwater or saltwater that eats smaller fish. They can be fished in a few different ways but I tend to fish them in a quick jerk-jerk-pause rhythm. The strike is almost always on the pause, as a fish will follow it and then snatch it up when it stops. The stock rings and hooks are ok but I sometimes upgrade them if fishing for big reef fish or Peacock Bass or something strong like that. The only downside to this lure is that it doesn’t cast that well in the wind.
Krocodile spoon
These flashy spoons have a very erratic side to side action that trigger strikes when retrieved at a slow, steady pace. If you retrieve them too fast they start to spin and aren’t very effective, but if you are in a position to be able to fish them slowly they can be deadly. This spoon will catch almost any fish in fresh or salt water that eats smaller baitfish. It casts extremely well. In water than is not too deep they can also be dropped to the bottom and jigged. Just let the line down to the bottom, snap them up a foot or two, and then let them flutter down. I have caught many species on this lure, and it is one of my favorite lures for White Seabass.
Heru Cubera
This is a very well made heavy duty popper for big saltwater fish such as Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Snapper, Tuna, etc. It is kind of a specialty lure but works very well on the fish it is targeted at. It makes a big splash and can be outfitted with heavy duty hooks (they don’t come with hooks or split rings attached). Just cast it out, rip it forward a couple of feet at a time so that it throws up a spray of water. For Snapper you should fish them slower, with longer pauses between rips. For Giant Trevally and Tuna you should fish them faster.
Plastic Strip and Bubble
This is a deadly technique described on the Bluefin Trevally page. It catches all sorts of reef fish in the tropics. It is not widely used in many places so it offers fish a look at something different and can really be great at bringing fish from long distances.
Senko
This lure is deadly on Largemouth Bass and Smallmouth Bass. I haven’t caught anything else on it, but Bass seem to love it. See the Largemouth Bass page for how to fish it.
