Belize Fishing
Belize is a relaxing and friendly place to vacation and do a little fishing. It does not have much freshwater fishing that I know of, but its large barrier reef is the longest in the Western Hemisphere and the second-longest in the world behind the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Belize is not a noted big-game destination, but has fine light-tackle inshore fishing for Snook, Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, and various reef species such as Snappers and Groupers. Belize is not really a trophy destination for any of these species, and I probably would not come here just to fish unless I was really focused on fly fishing for flats species, but there are some good fish to be had and a number of good guides who specialize in fly fishing. There are some high end lodges that cater to fly fishermen, but if you happen to be in Belize on vacation and just want to go fishing for a day there are plenty of local guides who can find fish for you for a very reasonable fee. I was able to go out with local fishermen in both Caye Caulker and Placencia and caught plenty of fish. However, if you go this route you should probably bring your own tackle. I did borrow a fly rod from one local fishermen who took me out and it worked well but you can never count on that.
Down South in Placencia you have a good shot at seeing whale sharks if you go at the right time of year. This migration corresponds with the Mutton Snapper spawn, which can also provide some good fishing opportunities if you like bottom fishing.
